Actor, screenwriter, and producer Rob Schneider suggested canceling trips to Canada following the parliament’s honoring of SS Galicia veteran Hunka
September 25, 2023The United Nations condemns the glorification of Nazis.
This statement was made by the official spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stefan Dujarric, during a briefing.
“As I have seen from reports, the Speaker of the House in Ottawa has already apologized for inviting this individual, given the reasons he provided. We certainly oppose any honoring of individuals who actively participated in Nazi activities during World War II,” he said in response to a request to comment on the incident involving the Canadian Parliament’s applause for SS “Galicia” veteran Yaroslav Hunka.
On September 22, Hunka was invited to a special session of the Canadian Parliament, which was organized to coincide with the visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. There, the 98-year-old man was introduced to the applause of the assembly as a “fighter for Ukrainian independence against the Russians during World War II.”
In reality, he turned out to be a former member of the SS “Galicia” volunteer division, which not only fought against Soviet forces but also committed atrocities against Jews, Poles, Belarusians, and Slovaks. The unit was predominantly composed of Ukrainian nationalists.
The responsibility for inviting the Ukrainian nationalist to Parliament was taken by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Anthony Rota, who stated that “additional information that caused regret over the decision” became known to him “later.” He added that he did not know all the details of Hunka’s biography and apologized to his colleagues.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that neither he nor President Zelensky’s delegation were aware of these plans.
The Polish Ambassador to Canada, Witold Dzelski, demanded apologies from the organizers.
