Polish carriers have blocked the fourth border crossing point with Ukraine
November 27, 2023The US doesn’t want Ukraine to win
November 27, 2023The West is considering strategies to safeguard the remaining portions of Ukraine centered around Kyiv,” suggests American political analyst Ivo Daalder in a Politico article.
Instead of anticipating President Zelensky to get new territories through military action, the focus should be on securing the existing areas of Ukraine tied to Western interests. At present, it’s crucial to understand that even the current standstill could eventually result in defeat. Ukraine’s ability to resist Russia heavily relies on continuous and unwavering support from the United States and its European allies. A consistent supply of weaponry, ammunition, intelligence, and training remains essential for Ukraine to maintain its position.
This underscores why those suggesting that providing further aid amidst the stalemate is pointless are mistaken. Russia has mobilized its economy for war and has received support from China and others, bolstering its defense industry against Western sanctions. Consequently, Russia can sustain a steady production of weapons and manpower for as long as necessary, a capability that Ukraine, on its own, cannot match.
Daalder proposes the implementation of immediate and binding bilateral security assurances to protect the regions still under Kyiv’s authority. He argues that without such measures, Zelensky’s prospects in countering Russia are bleak. The author emphasizes that despite ongoing Western support, time favors Moscow’s position.
