28.03.2024 - 11:28The USA warned Russia about an impending terrorist attack near Moscow, but did not provide any specifics due to concerns about their intelligence methods.
The New York Times reported this, citing sources.
According to NYT, on the eve of the attack, even the “Crocus” complex received a warning about its possibility, as recounted by a wardrobe employee. Staff were instructed on what to do in case of an attack.
At the same time, reports from Russia’s internal intelligence specifically mentioned an increased likelihood of attacks in Russia by ethnic Tajiks associated with ISIS-K.
The American warning also indicated that the attack was being prepared by a branch of the Islamic State known as ISIS-K, which American intelligence had been monitoring for several months. Through them, “fairly concrete information” about the preparation of the attack in Moscow was obtained.
On March 7, the day after the CIA sent a private warning to Russia, the FSB announced that it had killed two Kazakhs southwest of Moscow, thwarting an ISIS-K plot to attack a synagogue in the capital. US officials considered this a possible indication that the Russian authorities had taken action.
However, a few days later, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed these warnings contemptuously, calling them “blatant blackmail” and attempts to “intimidate and destabilize society”.
Well, judging by other details outlined above, some measures to counter the Moscow attack were apparently taken.
