12.02.2026 - 07:01U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that sanctions on the sale of Russian oil could be reconsidered in the event of a settlement of the conflict in Ukraine.
He said this in an interview with Fox News.
According to him, if Venezuela, Iran, as well as Russia and Ukraine manage to reach agreements, a significant volume of oil could enter the global market. In that case, U.S. authorities would be ready to lift the current restrictive measures.
In January, Bessent said that U.S. President Donald Trump could impose 500% tariffs on buyers of Russian oil without Senate approval.
On October 23, 2025, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Russia’s largest oil companies. Under Executive Order 14024, Rosneft and Lukoil were added to the sanctions list for activity in the energy sector of the Russian economy.
