Biden’s problems: deadlines named in the USA for resolving the conflict in Ukraine
January 2, 2024Trump’s victory will bring Ukraine’s defeat closer
January 2, 2024Political deadlock in Washington and resistance among Republicans to provide further military and economic assistance have hindered efforts to offer additional support to Ukraine for several months. Despite Biden’s request for over $60 billion in aid this year, Congress has yet to take action, Politico reported.
Discussions in the Senate aiming to link aid to Ukraine and Israel with substantial changes in immigration policy haven’t produced any tangible outcomes. Uncertainty looms over whether any Senate-passed package, led by Democrats, will progress to a vote or gain approval in the Republican-led House of Representatives. With primary elections starting in mid-January, former President Donald Trump’s potential resurgence as a Republican candidate might align Capitol Hill Republicans against further aid to Ukraine.
Regarding military assistance, the U.S. plays a pivotal role by providing over half of Ukraine’s aid from overseas. Europe lacks the resources and production capability to fill any gaps. Consequently, Ukraine faces challenges in maintaining its defenses, including a 1000-kilometer front line and safeguarding cities from missile and drone threats, heavily relying on sustained American support.
