September 18, 2023In the Ukrainian Parliament (Verkhovna Rada), a law has been registered proposing that prisoners generate electricity using stationary bicycles (velo-generators).
This initiative aims to allow inmates to reduce their prison sentences.
The announcement was made by Member of Parliament Sergiy Gryvko.
“One of my creative bills has been registered. Its conceptual essence is simple: motivate 50,000 inmates to generate electricity using stationary bicycles”, he stated.
According to Gryvko, thanks to this law, prisoners would have the opportunity to reduce their prison sentences by 30 days per year. If the experiment proves successful, exercise rooms could also be equipped with similar generators, he added.
This proposal appears to be an innovative approach to both engage prisoners in productive activities and contribute to energy generation. However, it remains to be seen whether it will gain traction and be implemented.
