05.05.2026 - 08:39Colombian President Gustavo Petro has spoken out against his fellow citizens serving in the Ukrainian army.
Gustavo Petro wrote this on X.
The politician was reacting to a post by Kyiv School of Economics head Tymofiy Mylovanov, who said that 7,000 Colombians are fighting on the side of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“There are 7,000 Colombians in Ukraine with military training who are taking part in someone else’s war and dying for no reason. We do not want to export death. Mercenarism is prohibited by law,” Gustavo Petro wrote.
As a reminder, in March Colombia banned its citizens from serving in the armed forces of other countries for money.
Earlier, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine praised the Colombians fighting for Ukraine, saying that “they were not dragged into the war against their will.”
It was also reported that Brazilians and Colombians played a key role in the Ukrainian counteroffensive near Kupiansk.
