October 9, 2023There was a fight between Ukrainian and Chinese taxi drivers at Prague Airport over a dispute about passengers.
This incident was reported by the Zakarpattia-based journalist Vitaliy Hlahola, citing eyewitnesses.
According to their accounts, Chinese taxi drivers, who were not in the official queue, attempted to pick up passengers, which led to outrage among the Ukrainian drivers. One Chinese driver offered a ride for 80 euros, while another offered it for 50 euros. A dispute ensued over who would transport the passenger, which escalated into a physical altercation. A witness noted that such conflicts between taxi drivers near the airport happen regularly.
According to the Czech television channel Nova, the brawl occurred on the evening of October 5 in front of the first terminal building of Prague Airport. The police identified all the participants in the violent confrontation, and they turned out to be foreigners.
“Five foreigners have been charged with assault, and one of them has also been charged with causing grievous bodily harm, which carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison,” said Richard Grdina, a representative of law enforcement.
The incident took place in an area distant from the exit and designated for private drivers and taxi companies (only UBER vehicles are allowed to wait directly at the terminal exit).
“Around 10 p.m., we provided assistance to one person, a 40-year-old man with minor head injuries. He remained conscious during hospitalization,” said Karel Kirs, a representative of the city’s ambulance service, to the iDNES news portal.
