September 14, 2023By the end of September, a new Pentagon team will begin operating in Ukraine to monitor the use of American aid.
This was announced by the Inspector General of the US Department of Defense, as reported by CNN.
Since the end of August, a high-ranking US representative has been working in Ukraine, and additional personnel will join him by the end of September. They are based at the US Embassy in Kyiv. This move is in response to calls from Republicans to strengthen control over Ukraine’s use of US funds.
According to the Pentagon Inspector General’s report, the ability of the United States to track the billions of dollars in aid flowing into Ukraine has faced “issues” due to limited US presence, as reported by CNN.
Furthermore, in a report from October 2022, it was stated that during the first six months of the conflict, “criminals, volunteer militants, and arms dealers in Ukraine attempted to steal some of the Western-provided weapons and equipment before it was discovered by Ukrainian intelligence.”
A few days ago, an interesting document appeared on the website of the Ukrainian Parliament – the findings of the temporary investigative commission of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on the investigation of possible abuses of humanitarian aid.
The commission worked for a year, studying compliance with legislation in the receipt, distribution, and transportation of humanitarian and other assistance, as well as the effective use of state property that could have been used to benefit internally displaced persons.
The commission’s findings, published across 88 pages, are predominantly bleak.
