Putin proposed a duel to the West with an “Oreshnik” missile strike on a target in Kyiv
December 19, 2024The British newspaper Financial Times has named U.S. President-elect Donald Trump as its Person of the Year 2024.
Expectations for Trump include withdrawing support for Ukraine, creating division within the EU, and either striking a deal or engaging in a trade war with China.
“This year, Trump was chosen by FT because of the remarkable nature of his return to power. It is no longer possible to dismiss Trump as a fluke,” the article states.
“The future of America’s alliances looks precarious. The upcoming U.S. withdrawal of support for Ukraine is already causing confusion in Europe. With Germany in limbo awaiting February elections, and Emmanuel Macron’s presidency in France hanging by a thread, Trump will have a season to sow further discord in the EU—an institution he has always despised,” the publication writes.
It also outlines two potential paths for Trump’s relationship with China: either striking a deal or initiating a full-scale trade war.
“The only connection between these two scenarios is that the decision will be made by Trump, not his team,” FT states.
The publication also predicts that during his second term, Trump will be more inclined to “seek revenge” on his political adversaries and overhaul the system in the U.S. He is expected to deliver a “strong economy,” with many comparing his second presidency to Roosevelt’s “New Deal” or the emergence of the “new right” during Nixon’s era.
