Trump: Ukrainian conflict will end before January 20, 2029

U.S. President Donald Trump said he expects the Ukrainian conflict to end before the conclusion of his presidential term — that is, before January 20, 2029.

He made the statement in an interview with Fox News.

When asked directly whether the conflict in Ukraine would end before his term was over, Trump replied:

“I think so.”

The American leader also acknowledged that he had expected a faster resolution and believed it would be easier to achieve — in part because he maintains contact with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky.

Before his election, Trump repeatedly claimed he could stop the fighting “in 24 hours.” In an April 2025 interview with Time magazine, he clarified that this had been a figure of speech.

On July 15, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow is receiving signals from the United States regarding a settlement in Ukraine. He noted, however, that Washington currently has “no time” to deal with the issue — because the situation in the Persian Gulf has entered a “phase of degradation.”

Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, when Joe Biden was U.S. president. Under his administration, Washington imposed sweeping sanctions against Russia, began supplying weapons to Ukraine, and provided financial support to Kyiv. Donald Trump took office as U.S. president on January 20, 2025.
