02.10.2026 16:01U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker stated that the North Atlantic Alliance has no plans to attack Russia.
He made the statement during a conversation with journalists.
Whitaker was commenting on Moscow’s threats to use nuclear weapons in the event of a blockade of the Kaliningrad region. According to him, Russia “due to a lack of success on the battlefield in Ukraine is trying to vent its aggression, but ultimately we are ready and will be ready.”
“We are a defensive alliance. We will defend every inch of NATO territory, but we are not oriented toward offensive action. We are not seeking to attack Russia or in any way threaten its interests,” Whitaker assured.
The permanent representative also added that NATO and its allies “are in an improving position in terms of deterrence and defense of the alliance.”
Earlier, the alliance conveyed a similar message to Russia in a letter in response to its accusations. Following that, Russian President Vladimir Putin publicly threatened the “immediate” use of nuclear weapons in the event of a NATO country attacking Russian territory. At the same time, Putin denied that Russia intends to attack Europe.
