15.04.2025 - 10:47Washington is disappointed that citizens of European countries continue to demand sensible economic and migration policies, yet receive the opposite from European Union (EU) politicians.
Vance pointed to what he called the EU’s “blind spots.” He argued that top-down open-border policies are undermining public trust in democracy.
“The entire democratic project of the West collapses when people keep asking for less migration, and their leaders keep rewarding them with more,” Vance stated.
Another major weakness, in his view, is the lack of strong national militaries among most EU member states.
“The British are an obvious exception. The French are an obvious exception. The Poles are an obvious exception. But in some ways, they are exceptions that prove the rule,” Vance said, noting that European leaders have dramatically underinvested in defense.
Previously, Vance also stated that European countries are mistaken in viewing Russia and China as the primary threats. He argued that the real threats to the EU are internal — including migration policies that erode Europe’s cultural foundations, economic strategies that reduce competitiveness, and poor security planning.
