Ukraine has lost more than 500 locomotives due to Russian strikes — Politico

Since 2022, the railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia has lost more than five hundred locomotives as a result of Russian strikes.

This was reported by the American newspaper Politico.

More than 60% of the losses occurred over the last eight months. Amid intensifying attacks, Ukrzaliznytsia is losing an average of 37–40 locomotives per month.

Quickly replacing the losses with European equipment is not possible due to differences in railway track gauge. The cost of one new locomotive is around five million euros.

Previously, Ukrzaliznytsia did not rule out that one of Russia’s strikes may have been targeting a train carrying European politicians.

In addition, rail service to Sumy was suspended due to the threat of shelling.
