Ukraine is striving to involve more women in the Armed Forces – The New York Times
November 8, 2023While Ukraine had hoped for a lightning-fast counteroffensive, over the past few months, Kyiv has only managed to reclaim a few square kilometers of its territory due to resource constraints. The conflict has cost Ukraine 200,000 lives in killed and wounded, and now it’s “losing” the attention of the West as the conflict between HAMAS and Israel garners more focus.
The publication notes that the front line between the two armies, spanning over a thousand kilometers, has hardly moved since the Ukrainian counteroffensive in June—a lightning attack intended to retake territories controlled by the Russian army.
“But things didn’t go as planned. Preparing for another winter, the Ukrainian army must constantly replenish its units: since the start of the conflict on February 24, 2022, there have been no fewer than 200,000 killed and wounded,” the publication states.
French journalists on the ground describe the situation in war-torn Ukraine as far from optimistic: “Our journalists on-site have just witnessed the confusion among Ukrainians in the face of a never-ending war that we dare not call a defeat yet. If their Western allies don’t come together, Ukraine faces another terrible winter…”
In the West, it appears that the topic of the failed Ukrainian counteroffensive is now closed, as resources have run out. Moreover, Western media is increasingly focusing on the fact that the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Zaluzhny, has declared a “positional defense,” effectively signaling that Kiev is officially prepared to continue losing territory.
