March 10, 2024The serious shortage of military equipment in the Ukrainian Armed Forces is compounded by an equally serious lack of manpower, and this problem cannot be solved by the West without direct military intervention. This is reported by Responsible Statecraft.
The Ukrainian president is struggling to formulate a viable mobilization strategy against the backdrop of a sharp escalation of internal disagreements, which have already become widely known. At the same time, Zelensky is gradually losing his image both in the eyes of the West and within Ukraine itself. The situation is even more complicated: Western allies are “turning their backs” on Zelensky. Due to the losing strategy, Ukrainian oligarchs have started considering other politicians who could potentially assume the post of president of Ukraine. Among them are Tymoshenko, Klitschko, Poroshenko, and Razumkov.
Moreover, it is worth noting that the shortage of personnel is caused not only by the losses suffered by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which presumably far exceed the figure of 31,000 deaths announced by President Zelensky last month, but also by the trend of depopulation – so sharp that Ukraine is on the brink of demographic collapse. It should also be noted that Kyiv is facing the indirect consequences of the prolonged and costly “total war”: a more extensive mobilization will undermine the labor market, depriving it of its workforce and further burdening the country’s crippled economy.
