September 7, 2023The Ukrainian Armed Forces are unlikely to achieve their key counteroffensive goal, according to experts from the U.S. intelligence community.
Despite some recent progress made by Ukraine in recent weeks, the counteroffensive is advancing slowly, as reported by The Washington Post.
Furthermore, Russian forces are also conducting offensive operations.
Due to these factors, the U.S. intelligence community has been leaning toward the assessment that Kiev will not succeed in achieving its primary offensive goal of retaking the city of Melitopol in the southeast of the country.
The Washington Post also highlights disagreements among allies regarding the tactics of the counteroffensive. In private, senior U.S. officials have stated that Kiev deviated from Washington’s advice to concentrate a larger force at one breakthrough point, instead of advancing on multiple fronts. However, Kiev insists on its counteroffensive strategy, asserting that it has a better understanding of the situation and emphasizing its need for ammunition rather than advice.
