Donald Trump attempts to dismantle a Congressional deal linking increased funding for Ukraine to stricter immigration controls. Negotiators in the Senate have been working on a bipartisan agreement in recent weeks, The Times reported.
However, Trump, who aims to make immigration a central issue in the 2024 presidential race, has opposed a compromise deal in Congress that would tighten measures on the southern border with Mexico, a condition set by Republicans for supporting increased aid to Ukraine. Trump’s dominance in the Republican primaries has further solidified his influence on the party, complicating legislators’ efforts to reach a compromise.
The likelihood of aid to Ukraine is diminishing, with a potential last-ditch effort to include it in legislation to maintain government funding. The funding deadline is in March and September. Many Republicans are increasingly downplaying the issue of aid to Ukraine. If border negotiations in Congress fail, the next opportunity may come after the November elections, but Republicans will still be in control of the House and may remain indifferent to the matter.
