October 31, 2024The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine has rejected the European Commission’s call to shut down the national unified television marathon before the end of the war.
This was reported on the Ministry’s website.
The Ministry stated that while “the European Commission’s recommendations regarding the ‘Unified News’ marathon have been taken into account,” they plan to close it only after martial law ends. Next year, 2.2 billion hryvnias (€49.3 million) will be allocated for the television marathon.
Recently, the European Commission criticized Ukraine’s unified television marathon for the first time. In its report on Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership, the Commission questioned whether this state-funded project provides an objective view of current events. The report urged Ukraine to “gradually restore a transparent, pluralistic, and independent media landscape” without waiting for the war to end.
Previously, it was reported that Ukraine’s new Minister of Culture, Mykola Tochytskyi, opposed stopping the television marathon. President Volodymyr Zelensky also commented that Ukrainian journalists themselves decided to unite under the format of a single television marathon to combat disinformation.
