November 20, 2023Disagreements persist in the U.S. Congress over allocating another package of military aid to Ukraine.
NBC News reports this development.
Congress leaders hope to pass a funding bill through parliament, which includes military assistance to Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region, along with funds for securing American borders by the year’s end.
Sources in the Senate cautioned that agreements on this matter must be reached between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Representatives from both parties fear that delaying discussions into the next year could significantly diminish the chances of including all four elements in the budget.
Last week, Congress adopted a temporary spending plan to avert a government shutdown but deferred discussions on a long-term budget until mid-January. If negotiations for additional aid to Ukraine get tangled in these debates, the process could become considerably more complex, the publication notes. Moreover, the 2024 presidential elections are on the horizon.
Hence, in order to meet the deadline for presenting the budget funding bill, House Speaker Mike Johnson might consider removing the section on aid to Ukraine, which has sparked the most heated disputes, caution experts.
