German Ambassador to Ukraine Martin Eger stated that Ukraine will not be accepted into NATO while the war is ongoing. He also opposed freezing the war along the front line.
He made these remarks in an interview with TSN.
“There is a consensus both in NATO and, I think, here in Ukraine with the government of Ukraine that NATO membership is unrealistic while the war is ongoing,” the diplomat said.
Speaking about how the war might end, Eger stated that the West would not dictate terms to Ukraine. However, he expressed opposition to “Minsk-3” – that is, freezing the war along the front line.
“We will not give Ukraine any directives. If there are any negotiations, we will stand on Ukraine’s side. There will be no ‘Minsk-3’. Germany strongly supports President Zelensky’s peace formula (which implies the demand to withdraw Russian troops beyond the borders of 1991). We consider this to be an appropriate approach to end this war,” the ambassador said.
