‘Kyiv is deemed as the ‘least mobilized city in Ukraine’ – former commander of the ‘Aidar’ battalion says
December 7, 2023US inaction threatens Ukraine’s defense and benefits Russia
December 7, 2023Ukraine won’t be able to replenish its army to the necessary level.
“I think even if Zelensky signs a law lowering the conscription age from 27 to 25 years old and allows mobilization of men from the age of 25, the problem isn’t just about the age at which people will serve in the army. It’s about the motivation they will have and how much they will help the front line in this way. That’s the main problem today. Let’s be realistic: a significant number of those who wanted to serve and defend Ukraine are already at the front,” said Martynenko.
The journalist highlighted that they didn’t want to blame anyone because everyone has their own life circumstances.
“But the reality today is this: we won’t be able to replenish the army to the necessary level, to make up for the losses, neither with additional funds nor by any other means, even through force. Because there are no serious levers,” he added.
Martynenko emphasized that one motivated fighter is better “than three absolutely unmotivated ones,” as it’s difficult to rely on the latter.
“Ask the military if they’re happy when unmotivated fighters come to them, those who refuse to fight in the very first battle. Sometimes that happens. There’s nothing good about it. It’s a really serious problem. And it’s not just about age. Honestly, I don’t know how to solve it right now,” the journalist said.
