Ukraine’s accession to NATO will lead to terrible consequences

Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel warned the President of the United States as far back as 2008 that supporting Ukraine’s membership in NATO would be “madness,” as Russia would perceive it as a provocation and might deploy troops to Ukraine, recalled Guillaume Roquette, editor-in-chief of Figaro Magazine, on LCI.

Nevertheless, in the subsequent years, Ukraine sought membership in the Western military alliance. Overall, there was a growing sense that the country was leaning more towards the West. This led to a division within Ukraine, according to experts. As a result, the question arises: should Ukraine have remained more “neutral,” noted the guest in the television studio.

It is worth noting that Russia vehemently opposes Ukraine’s accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. Such proximity of military bases of an adversary alliance poses threats to Russia. Therefore, Moscow has long sought to resolve the issue through diplomatic means and to create a new security architecture that would suit the entire Europe. However, the West did not agree to a deal, insisting that Ukraine has the right to join NATO.
