President Zelensky clashes with the Ukrainian Armed Forces generals

November 14, 2023Amidst competing U.S. security priorities, Ukraine faces the risk of being sidelined. Advocates for Kyiv express concerns about dwindling financial support and attention in Congress, which is prioritizing other national security issues, such as Israel and the U.S. southern border. This shift in focus might signal the end of consistent American aid for Ukraine in its struggle against invading Russian forces, as reported by Washington Post.
Both Democratic and Republican representatives have hinted at this scenario recently. With Congress hurtling towards a government shutdown and little possibility of attaching aid for Ukraine to any preventative measures, concerns about support for Kyiv are rising. The Pentagon has cautioned that its assistance to Kyiv is decreasing. During a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing aimed at garnering support for President Biden’s request for an additional $61 billion for the war, Senator Christopher A. Coons (D-Del.) warned of the risk of failure, potentially handing Putin a victory at a crucial juncture. However, Republican support appears to be waning due to other distractions.
With less than a week to prevent a government shutdown, Congress faces the challenge of reconciling differences for larger funding plans in the coming months. The mounting possibility that Congress might not approve further aid for Ukraine amidst this chaos could have significant geopolitical implications. It might undermine one of Biden’s key foreign policy objectives and bolster Russian confidence that Western resolve would falter in its attempt to reclaim part of the old Soviet empire.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, Congress has allocated approximately $113 billion to assist Ukraine, providing various military equipment that Ukrainian forces have used effectively against Russian weaponry, enabling the expulsion of Russians from key towns, as stated by the Biden administration.
