01.03.2026 14:01It is planned to recruit foreigners for service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine in order to address problems with mobilization and mass desertion.
This was reported by Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov at a joint briefing with the Netherlands’ defense minister, Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius.
According to Fedorov, the plan to bring foreigners into the ranks of the Ukrainian army has allegedly already been tested during discussions with commanders and military experts.
“In the coming months you will see how, step by step, we begin to make concrete decisions,” the minister said.
Earlier, Ukraine’s First Deputy Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, spoke about problems with mobilization in the country. He acknowledged that Ukrainian forces lack reinforcements, while promising that Ukraine would avoid so-called “busification.” Havryliuk called forced mobilization a “shameful phenomenon.”
The deputy minister added that the rotation of servicemen drafted back in 2022 could happen “only when there is sufficient human resources to carry out training and replace the units that are fighting.”
