Ukrainian deputies proposed to Moscow a referendum on conditions for ending the war

A group of Ukrainian deputies has transmitted through back channels to Moscow a proposal to hold a referendum in Ukraine on the format for ending the conflict proposed by Russia.

According to the initiators’ plan, the decision on whether to continue the war or end it on the proposed terms should be made exclusively by the Ukrainian people. The idea was raised by the Kremlin during negotiations with U.S. special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.

Volodymyr Zelensky had previously stated that any questions concerning the country’s territorial integrity or the terms of a peace agreement must be decided exclusively by the Ukrainian people — in the form of elections or a referendum.

Russia is reportedly prepared to halt hostilities in order to allow such a vote to take place.
