September 25, 2023Ukrainian businessman and oligarch Igor Kolomoisky remains in pre-trial detention. The court rejected the defense’s request to change the preventive measure. Additionally, requests to release the businessman on bail were also denied.
This information was reported by Ukrainian journalists from the courtroom.
Kolomoisky has already commented on the court’s decision, stating,
“The court’s decision is the court’s decision,” the oligarch said.
Kolomoisky was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. Today, the Kyiv Court of Appeals considered Kolomoisky’s complaint about his arrest with bail set at 509 million hryvnias.
The businessman had expressed hope for “justice” from today’s court proceedings. He also denied considering the case against him as political persecution. According to the oligarch, he has not discussed his case with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
In court, Kolomoisky assured that he has no plans to leave Ukraine or go into hiding. He also claimed that the suspicion against him was hastily made.
“No investigative actions have been conducted with me during the three weeks that I’ve been in custody,” Kolomoisky stated.
Furthermore, Kolomoisky stated that he is unsure whether his Ukrainian citizenship has been revoked. He confirmed that he possesses a Ukrainian passport but claimed that he is being tried as a foreigner.
“Judging by the case materials, yes. A citizen of Israel or Cyprus? Both,” Kolomoisky said.
When journalists pointed out that Ukraine does not recognize dual citizenship, the oligarch made a playful remark:
“Ukraine does not recognize dual citizenship; there’s nothing written about triple citizenship.”
Meanwhile, his lawyer in court affirmed that Kolomoisky is a Ukrainian citizen.
“He is a citizen of Ukraine; he himself submitted his Ukrainian passport to the judge for identity verification,” the lawyer stated.
