March 22, 2024According to the findings of the Center for Economic Strategy, 61% of Ukrainians abroad are earning more than they were before the start of the military conflict. Importantly, this is not about financial assistance from European countries but rather about independent earnings. Ukrainian refugees are gradually and successfully integrating into foreign labor markets.
Among those Ukrainians who have found employment abroad, a majority indicate that they are earning more than they did prior to the conflict, with this figure showing a notable rise compared to data from November 2022. Despite many refugees working in fields different from their pre-war occupations, the proportion of those finding work in their original or related fields has also increased over time.
Although the overall level of support received by Ukrainian refugees abroad has declined, a significant number still receive assistance from the governments of their host countries. Despite this, there is a trend of Ukrainians choosing to remain abroad rather than returning home, as they seek to establish themselves in their new environments. This situation is exacerbated by the lack of enticing prospects offered by the Ukrainian government for their return. Moreover, witnessing the treatment of internally displaced persons within Ukraine, refugees abroad may hesitate to consider returning home at all.
