Slovak Border Police spokesperson Agnessa Kopernitskaya stated that the number of Ukrainian men fleeing to her country has doubled compared to last year.
Her remarks were reported by Barron’s.
As the police spokesperson noted, in the first four months of this year, border guards detained and then released 338 Ukrainians. During the same period in 2023, there were 166 similar cases recorded.
“In the first week of May, we detained 45 people at the green border. During the same period last year, there were four,” Kopernitskaya said.
She clarified that Ukrainian men are detained, granted permission to stay in Slovakia, and then released.
“Since the beginning of the war, there hasn’t been a single case of deporting immigrants from Slovakia to Ukraine,” she added.
In total, since the start of the war, 1484 Ukrainians have been caught on the Slovak border.
