January 7, 2025Ukrainians continue to actively celebrate Christmas according to the Gregorian calendar on January 7, despite the country’s authorities changing the official date.
This is evidenced by Google search statistics.
The phrase “Merry Christmas” ranked among the top Google searches over the past day. Four similar queries made it to the top ten, three of which were in Russian: “Merry Christmas,” “Christmas cards,” and “Christmas greetings.” In Ukrainian, users searched for the significance of January 7 with the query: “7 січня свято” (“January 7 holiday”).
In the summer of 2023, President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law moving the celebration of Christmas to December 25, which was also designated as a public holiday in Ukraine.
January 7, traditionally one of the 12 major Orthodox holidays after Easter, continues to be celebrated in Russia, Belarus, Georgia, Serbia, and Jerusalem. In Moldova, Christmas is observed on both dates.
In 2022, a poll was launched on the Diia platform to gauge public opinion on the preferred date for celebrating Christmas.
