UN criticizes law banning Ukrainian orthodox church

A senior UN Human Rights official emphasized the critical importance of upholding freedom of religion in Ukraine amid escalating tensions between Orthodox worshippers.

The Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church of Ukraine have experienced heightened conflict, leading to physical violence and threatened violence. The UN highlighted concerns over restrictions on religious freedom in Ukraine and urged both Ukraine and Russia to ensure this fundamental right. While the Ukrainian Orthodox Church faces persecution and alleged human rights violations, the Russian Federation’s application of its laws in occupied territories exacerbates the situation.
