‘Under the USSR, it was better’: Orban stated that the situation with the Hungarian language in Transcarpathia under Ukraine has worsened

The situation with the Hungarian language and education in Transcarpathia during the Soviet era was better than it is now in independent Ukraine.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made this statement to the local publication RTL.

“I am not exaggerating when I say that from the perspective of the Hungarian language and education, the situation during the Soviet Union era was better than it is now, during the times of the Ukrainian state,” said the Hungarian Prime Minister.

According to him, Ukraine “continues to punish the Transcarpathians,” and therefore Budapest will provide them with assistance. He reiterated his statement that Hungary will not assist Ukraine in the war.

“It is very difficult to help a country that is at war without having an internationally recognized military goal,” Orbán stated.

He believes that Kiev has not clearly defined the war’s objective, and the current situation is “hopeless,” with thousands of people dying in a “Christian-civil war.”
