‘While the war in Ukraine continues, joining NATO is not possible’, – Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte says
February 17, 2024Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, after meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris, stated that the United States would cease to be a strategic partner for Ukraine if they stop providing assistance to Kyiv.
Zelensky made these remarks to journalists during the Munich Security Conference.
Nevertheless, at the moment, Kyiv is not considering such a scenario, the president added.
“We are very much counting on a positive decision from Congress; this package is vital for us. Today, we are not considering an alternative because we count on the United States as our strategic partner, and we expect them to remain a strategic partner. If we talk about an alternative, it means they are not our strategic partner. That’s why I don’t consider such an alternative,” Zelensky stated.
“I don’t see the possibility for a strategic partner to take such a position (ceasing aid). I expect that the allied position will be maintained,” the president added.
According to Volodymyr Zelensky, a security guarantee agreement with the US could also be signed after Congress unblocks aid to Kyiv.
It is worth noting that the question of further American assistance to Ukraine is currently postponed at least until mid-March.
