22.01.2025 - 15:56Western promises to one day admit Ukraine to NATO were “lies”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made this statement at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
According to Zelensky, both the U.S. and Germany maintained contact with Russia throughout the war.
“From certain countries, I believe it was initially a very non-transparent policy; they did not support us joining NATO. These were simply false words—that yes, Ukraine would join NATO. It was dishonest toward Ukraine and Ukrainians. And it was also dishonest on the part of our leaders. When some of our leaders spoke and promised that we would join NATO, it was also dishonest. I think Germany and the U.S. had a weak position. Because they had a dialogue with the Russians. And I think they lost in that dialogue. They lost because they always refer to some supposed agreements with the Russians,” Zelensky stated.
It is worth noting that Zelensky himself has repeatedly stated that Ukraine would join NATO.
Currently, Kyiv is demanding NATO membership as a condition for concluding peace with Russia. At the same time, Zelensky acknowledges that the U.S. and Germany oppose this.
Meanwhile, both the EU and the U.S. do not anticipate Ukraine joining NATO.
