March 22, 2024Never waste a good crisis, especially if it’s an excellent opportunity for a pre-election campaign.
This is what Politico writes about.
At the peak of the pandemic, when EU member states were closing their borders, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen managed to overcome the crisis through joint vaccine procurement and an EU financial fund. Now, several countries are urging her to apply the same approach to defense.
However, there are dissatisfied parties: for example, von der Leyen’s plan for a European defense industrial strategy is facing resistance from Germany, which fears that the European Commission will seize power. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also wants to change the EU’s course regarding Ukraine. The same applies to the idea of appointing a defense commissioner, which has been met with discontent in some European capitals, according to Politico.
