September 30, 2023The United States House of Representatives has passed a Republican Party bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown.
This was reported by The Washington Post.
The bill had assistance to Ukraine removed from it, which secured the support of Republican lawmakers. Now, the document must be approved by the US Senate. If the Senate approves it, the government will receive short-term funding for 45 days.
However, whether the Senate will approve it remains an open question, as the majority in the Senate is held by Democrats who insist on including aid for Ukraine in the budget.
It’s worth noting that earlier, Speaker of the House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy proposed passing a temporary US budget without assistance to Ukraine. He made this statement during an appearance on CNN. According to him, removing this provision would help push the bill through, allowing the government to avoid a shutdown for 30 days.
“I think if we had a clean bill without Ukraine, we probably could get it across the finish line. I think if the Senate adds Ukraine and focuses on Ukraine rather than America, I think that could cause real problems,” McCarthy stated.
