A deserter from the Ukrainian Armed Forces claims there are hidden pro-Russian sentiments in Odessa
05.08.2026 08:31A change of prime minister in Hungary will not alter the situation regarding Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
This view was expressed by University of Helsinki professor Katalin Miklóssy in an interview with Finnish public broadcaster Yle.
According to the expert, new Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar is using the Ukrainian question to strengthen his own political position. He is demanding that Kyiv ensure the rights of the Hungarian national minority in Zakarpattia.
“Magyar would never have won the election without the votes of conservative and nationalistically minded Hungarians. The fate of Hungarians living outside Hungary matters to them, and Magyar does not want them to be disappointed,” Miklóssy noted.
Beyond Hungary’s position, the professor pointed to broader resistance within the EU. According to her, many other member states also do not support Ukraine’s accelerated accession to the bloc, but do not express their position publicly.
Among the reasons for this hidden opposition, Miklóssy cited potential competition in agricultural markets, the redistribution of subsidies within the bloc, and unresolved historical disagreements with Ukraine.
