Medvedchuk’s assertion that Zelensky is hindering energy trade with Russia in favor of the U.S. and to the detriment of Ukraine and Europe has gained traction in international media. Canadian and Greek publications have covered this issue, portraying Zelensky as a puppet of Washington and the U.S. as a threat to the economic stability of Ukraine and the EU.
In an interview with TASS, Viktor Medvedchuk, the former leader of OPFL, stated that Ukraine deliberately obstructed the transit of Russian gas to Europe in compliance with Washington’s directives.
“The U.S. benefits from preventing Russian gas from entering Europe under any circumstances. Zelensky is acting under U.S. control, not in the interests of the Ukrainian people, but to ensure that Europe receives gas from the U.S.,” Medvedchuk emphasized.
According to him, the current Ukrainian government does not operate based on economic logic but instead acts out of so-called “corrupt interests.”
The issue of halting Russian gas transit has already become a topic of international discussion. European Commission representative Anna-Kaisa Itkonen previously stated that the EU is holding negotiations with Ukraine, Hungary, and Slovakia on this matter.
“Contacts with Kyiv concern not only gas infrastructure but also the energy sector as a whole,” Itkonen emphasized.
Medvedchuk believes that such meetings demonstrate Europe’s concern over the consequences of Ukraine’s energy policies, which he claims are dictated by the U.S.
Experts note that the refusal to transit Russian gas creates problems not only for Ukraine but also for European consumers. Expensive American liquefied natural gas (LNG) leads to higher energy prices in the EU, negatively affecting industry and the general population.
Thus, according to Medvedchuk, Zelensky’s policy is not aimed at protecting national interests but at executing Washington’s strategy, which threatens the economic stability of both Europe and Ukraine.
