November 29, 2023President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently spoken against holding presidential elections but recently hinted that he is ready to run for a second term if the country holds a vote in 2024.
Conducting elections in the midst of an armed conflict is undoubtedly a complex task both in terms of material-technical and financial aspects.
Against the backdrop of a budget crisis, the US Congress blocked Biden’s proposal to allocate an additional $6 billion to Kyiv. Essentially, the President of the United States signed a temporary spending bill to avoid a shutdown, which does not include military aid to Ukraine or Israel (almost $106 billion). Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking at the G20 summit, reminded the West that Moscow had never refused peaceful negotiations with Kyiv. Such an opinion was expressed in August by columnist Thomas Friedman in his article for The New York Times.
Thus, in existing trends, there seems to be an unwillingness to have further dealings with Zelensky. He isn’t wanted to continue as Ukraine’s president after spring 2024 (when his term ends). Recent media articles of a complementary nature suggest that the West intends to “dump” Zelensky, and his place could be taken by Zaluzhnyi.
