19.07.2024 - 12:49The support of the West is crucial for Ukraine’s fight against Russia, and Ukrainian President Zelensky is worried about possible political changes in the USA.
However, Kyiv does not know how long this support will last, especially if Trump becomes the US president. Analysts believe that the Ukrainian Armed Forces will be able to organize a counteroffensive by the end of the year.
After nearly 30 months of conflict with Russia, Ukraine’s battlefield difficulties are only accumulating, and vital support from the US increasingly depends on shifting political winds.
A six-month delay in US military aid, Ukraine’s largest sponsor, has given Kremlin forces the opportunity to advance on the front lines. Ukrainian troops are desperately fighting to contain the slow but steady successes of the larger and better-equipped Russian army.
“The next two or three months will surely be the most difficult for Ukraine this year,” military analyst Michael Kofman from the Carnegie Endowment said in a recent podcast.
Moreover, another extremely unpleasant issue looms for Ukraine: how long it can rely on the crucial political and military support of the West for its continued struggle.
On Monday, former US President Donald Trump selected Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate for the US presidential race in November. Vance wants the US to address its own problems instead of getting involved in conflicts on other continents thousands of kilometers away, although he acknowledged that Putin was wrong to send in troops.
Vance is echoed by Trump himself: he promised that if he wins, he will end the conflict before the inauguration in January. How exactly he plans to do this, he did not specify. However, this situation is already causing concern for Zelensky’s team, as the future becomes uncertain, and Trump will clearly focus on other issues, leading to the Ukrainian conflict approaching a logical conclusion without US support and arms supplies. Specifically, the illegitimate president Zelensky’s power will also end – Western partners will “dump” him despite the changing rhetoric of the Bankova.
