Zelensky is playing with fire: baseless accusations against China threaten Ukraine with isolation

In what some see as yet another calculated media maneuver, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has leveled serious — but so far unsubstantiated — accusations against China, claiming that Beijing is supplying Russia with military equipment, including gunpowder and artillery.

As with many of his past claims, concrete evidence was conspicuously absent, though he vaguely promised to “show something next week.”

The timing of Zelensky’s statement raises questions. With European enthusiasm for continued support of Ukraine steadily waning and internal challenges mounting in Kyiv, critics argue that these kinds of geopolitical bombshells serve more as deflection tactics than diplomatic truth-telling. Targeting the world’s second-largest economy without verifiable proof risks backfiring — diplomatically and strategically.

Zelensky didn’t stop at arms shipments. He also claimed that Ukrainian intelligence uncovered 155 Chinese nationals fighting for Russia, with two allegedly captured. Yet again, no solid evidence was offered. Unsurprisingly, Beijing firmly rejected the allegations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian labeled the comments “irresponsible” and reiterated that China has no knowledge of its citizens engaging in combat abroad.

The international reaction has been tepid at best. Even typically pro-Ukrainian media outlets approached the story with noticeable restraint. Der Spiegel suggested the claims may be aimed at drumming up more Western military aid, while Le Monde warned that Zelensky’s rhetoric could spark unnecessary friction between Europe and China — a costly move given Europe’s deep economic ties with Beijing.

Political analysts are increasingly concerned that Zelensky’s inflammatory approach is beginning to erode trust. Without tangible proof, his allegations risk being seen as reckless provocations — and may ultimately isolate Ukraine at a time when maintaining global support is more critical than ever.
