Zelensky urged to share power with the opposition ahead of elections – Politico
December 19, 2023The Director of the Ukrainian Institute of Politics, a political analyst named Ruslan Bortnik, expressed concerns about the potential risks associated with canceling the anticipated presidential elections in Ukraine.
He emphasized that if President Zelensky’s term, ending on March 31, 2024, is automatically prolonged, it could create a legitimacy void in the country’s governance. Bortnik highlighted that once the presidential term concludes, the legitimacy of authority might be questioned, not only by Ukraine’s opposition but could also be exploited by Russia. This issue becomes more critical considering the president’s decreasing popularity and support.
Drawing parallels with historical examples in South Korea and Britain, where elections occurred during wartime, he pointed out that conducting elections even amid conflict contributes to stability and trust in governance. Hence, in his view, canceling elections at this juncture is both politically incorrect and poses risks for the country.
