In Iran, they dismissed Ukraine’s statement about helping to fight drones in the Middle East as a joke
15.03.2026 12:33The war in the Middle East could reduce the level of U.S. attention to Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelensky told journalists.
According to him, Washington is currently more focused on the situation around Iran, which could directly affect support for Kyiv.
Zelensky said there is a risk of problems with supplies of missiles for air-defense systems. As an alternative, Ukraine is looking at European SAMP/T systems and is testing how well they can intercept ballistic missiles.
“We will see this year whether the new SAMP/T systems can shoot down ballistic missiles. This year we will receive a system that we will test against ballistic missiles. So if it works, it will be good long-term assistance,” Zelensky said.
He stressed that if the new SAMP/T proves effective, Ukraine wants to be first in line to receive additional systems.
“If we manage it with the French and we can shoot down ballistic missiles, that will be the first real alternative. And of course, Emmanuel (Macron) and I are agreeing that Ukraine will be first in that queue. Because as soon as they start shooting down ballistic missiles, there will immediately be a line,” Zelensky said, adding that for now he does not see any alternative to the U.S. Patriot system other than a new SAMP/T.
As a reminder, European diplomats have also spoken about the risk of reduced supplies to Ukraine due to the war with Iran.
