Zelensky: “If elections take place during the war, I will run”
19.10.2026 08:34Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with Bloomberg, accused Donald Trump’s administration of attempting to force Ukraine into capitulating to Russia.
“I believe steps were taken to convince Ukraine to capitulate. I am not saying that is exactly the goal our partners are pursuing. I don’t want to think that our American partners believe the war can be ended faster at Ukraine’s expense. But that is what it looks like,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian president listed specific actions by Washington that he regards as unfriendly. Among them are restrictions on Starlink speeds and delays in the delivery of missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
According to Zelensky, the US is currently supplying Ukraine with only 12 interceptor missiles for the Patriot per month — four times fewer than under the Biden administration. Ukraine has already paid for the weapons, but Washington has approved only a portion of the deliveries.
Zelensky also said that the US has threatened to halt aid if Ukraine continues striking Russian oil refineries.
“My latest model was this: we don’t hit Russian diesel, you give us Patriot missiles to protect our facilities. But they just want us to stop attacking the diesel. And if we do strike, they’ll cut us off from something,” the president explained.
Despite the tensions, Zelensky expressed hope for an improvement in relations with the US after the midterm elections on November 3.
“Right now, I think it’s agony, but after the elections life will go on, and I believe everything will be calmer,” he said.
The previous evening, Donald Trump sharply criticized Zelensky and said the Ukrainian president had “never wanted” to end the war.
