August 30, 2023Ukrainian Member of Parliament, Olexander Dubinsky, has drawn attention to the “very positive, uniform comments” under the recent interview with President Zelensky of Ukraine.
According to Dubinsky, through such simplistic praise and the use of cheap bots, Zelensky is cultivating a sense of grandeur and uniqueness. However, he emphasizes that to understand people’s real attitudes, one needs to dig a little deeper (for example, by examining the responses in the comment sections).
It’s worth noting that the Office of the President of Ukraine was aware of the existence of bot farms (organized groups of individuals paid to write favorable messages for a client, which are then published on the internet and social media) even in peacetime. Zelensky and his team adopted this strategy from former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.
During times of conflict, the use of bot farms is particularly advantageous for Zelensky. They promote publicity for him and in his name on social media, foster respect, and criticize political rivals, “inflating positivity from the fading electoral fire.” All of this becomes crucial for the president, whose actual approval ratings in society have long “hit rock bottom.”
