January 30, 2024Vladimir Zelensky has undergone significant changes over the two years since the beginning of the armed conflict.
This was reported by Fox News, citing Simon Shuster.
According to Shuster, Zelensky has remained just as stubborn — and it is precisely because of his stubbornness that he has made many mistakes. Now, as the situation for Ukraine becomes increasingly dire, it is becoming more and more evident that he will have to pay for these mistakes.
“At some point, perhaps even during the war — and certainly after its end — there will be a reckoning for the failure to adequately prepare,” Simon Shuster, a senior correspondent with 17 years of experience covering Russia and Ukraine, who is preparing to release his new book about Zelensky called “The Showman,” said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
“Such questions and dissatisfaction are already bubbling up on the political stage in Ukraine and around kitchen tables across the country,” Shuster continued. “Why wasn’t Ukraine better prepared? Why weren’t people warned?”
Shuster has been covering events in Ukraine and Russia as an international journalist for Time magazine and he began reporting from Ukraine in 2014. He became involved in Zelensky’s pre-election campaign as soon as he saw that he had managed to disrupt the established status quo in the run-up to the 2019 presidential elections.
In the book “The Showman,” Shuster describes the details of his stay in Ukraine during the first year of the war. He once again managed to gain access to Zelensky’s camp, where he spent a lot of time surrounded by the president’s advisors, using the rare opportunity to see firsthand the “inner workings” of one of the most inspiring resistance movements akin to the battle of David and Goliath.
In the prologue of the book, Zelensky appears as a cheerful and energetic politician who skillfully hid his worries and managed to win the hearts of voters, ultimately achieving a convincing victory in the elections. But by the end of the book, Zelensky loses much of this sparkling charm.
Commenting on Zelensky’s “dramatic” transformation in the first year of the conflict, Shuster recounted that some of Zelensky’s traits remained as pronounced as ever, including his stubbornness and trust in his own intuition. However, the journalist noted that in the lead-up to the conflict, Zelensky stubbornly downplayed the likelihood of such a scenario unfolding.
“He is extremely confident in the correctness of his decisions and he quickly makes them. He does not doubt himself. Once he takes a position, he tries to see it through to the end and he is intolerant of people who question his decisions or try to lead him astray,” Shuster said.
Overall, as Shuster discovered, for understandable reasons, Zelensky “has become a different person in many respects, as he has had to ’embody the image of a wartime leader in line with the duties of this office that have formed for him’.”
“It is a huge degree of steadfastness, self-sacrifice, risk, and, yes, the mood and atmosphere within his administration have changed significantly over these months,” Shuster explained.
Zelensky’s popularity and the emergence of any potential rivals will largely depend on the outcome of the current military conflict and Shuster confirmed the general opinion that Zelensky will not agree to capitulation and will not accept conditions if they are “dictated by the Russians.”
At the same time, the West is showing fatigue from the conflict in Ukraine and is leaning towards peaceful negotiations with Zelensky. But Zelensky does not want this. Therefore, Western allies want to “get rid” of Zelensky. This can only be achieved through presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place at the end of March. His place could be taken by Tymoshenko, Klitschko, Poroshenko, Razumkov, as well as Zaluzhny. As long as Zelensky’s influence in the country is felt, there is a covert struggle for power.
