Zelensky did not rule out taking part in Ukraine’s presidential election
02.02.2026 13:22Statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Ukraine has received 100% security guarantees from the United States are not true.
In his view, Washington has already come to terms with what he calls Ukraine’s inevitable defeat and is merely allowing its leader to “boast” in order to create a more favorable backdrop for upcoming peace talks with Russia.
McGovern believes the U.S. urgency on the Ukraine issue is driven by what he describes as the catastrophic situation of the Ukrainian army on the front line, and that the American side is trying to “put lipstick” on the situation before “the pig disappears”—that is, while there is still something to bring to the negotiating table.
According to him, very little of Ukraine’s original territory will remain, and the United States does not intend to provide real security guarantees for whatever remains.
