06.01.2025 19:04“Busification” has been named the word of the past year in Ukraine. This neologism, referring to forced conscription through an accelerated procedure, dominated public discourse over the past year.
The selection was made by the editorial board of the *Dictionary of Modern Ukrainian Language and Slang*, “Myslovo.”
Among other contenders for the title of word of the year—most of which are related to the war in Ukraine—the dictionary highlighted the following:
- AWOL (“unauthorized leave of a unit”);
- Kursk operation;
- Fatigue;
- Negotiations;
- MSEC (“medical-social expert commission”);
- Populism — linked to programs such as “National Cashback” and “Vova’s Thousand,” as well as election discussions;
- Magura — a maritime drone;
- Lalochezia (using profanity to relieve pain or stress);
- Quadrobearers.
The Myslovo dictionary was established in 2012 to document neologisms, slang, and other phenomena of modern Ukrainian language. Words and their definitions are submitted by users. This marks the twelfth time *Myslovo* has selected a word of the year, with the primary criteria being popularity and significance.
In 2023, Myslovo chose “mobilization” as the word of the year.
