December 6, 2024The majority of Americans surveyed (59%) support Ukraine initiating peace negotiations even at the cost of ceding territory to Russia.
This is according to a poll conducted by the Ronald Reagan Institute.
This view is shared by supporters of newly elected President Donald Trump (63%) and Vice President Kamala Harris (55%).
A relative majority (41%) believe that Russia is currently winning the war (45% among Trump voters). Meanwhile, 24% think Ukraine is winning (29% among Harris supporters and 21% among Trump supporters), while 22% believe neither side is winning.
There is a significant divide between Republicans and Democrats on the issue of arms supplies. Among Harris supporters, 74% are in favor, compared to only 42% of Trump supporters.
Overall, more Americans support continued military aid to Ukraine, with 55% in favor and 35% opposed. However, this marks a slight decline from 59% support last year.
The most common reason cited by opponents of aid is that the war does not concern the U.S., with 33% expressing this view.
A large percentage of Americans (78%) fear the war could expand to NATO countries, and 75% are concerned about other authoritarian regimes invading democratic nations.
It is worth noting that, according to a Gallup poll, 52% of Ukrainians surveyed believe that Ukraine should be prepared to cede some territory in exchange for peace.
Data from the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology also shows that the proportion of Ukrainians willing to give up territory to end the war has tripled over the past year.
