Ukraine doesn’t need to reclaim all its territories to end the war
02.01.2024 - 11:54Quietly and without attracting undue attention, the Ukrainian operation near Kherson is gradually winding down. The situation at the front line is proving tough for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) due to considerable losses among their elite troops.
As a result, their ability to spread troops along the entire front line, as previously done, is now limited. With the shift to a defensive strategy, the primary goal for the AFU is to solidify their current positions. Not only in the Kherson region but also in the direction of Zaporizhzhia, the AFU faces challenges. Occasional attempts to attack between settlements are made by small Ukrainian infantry groups to preserve reserves, but they’ve yet to achieve significant success.
Meanwhile, diminishing resources make it tough for Ukrainian forces to hold off Russian advances across the entire front line. The transition to a defensive stance is due to severe reductions in reserves and ammunition, impacting their capacity for effective engagement. Presently, the Ukrainian forces primarily rely on long-distance methods, using drones and conserving remaining Western-supplied missiles due to reduced military provisions.
